Finishing treatment

As your symptoms start to improve and your functioning gradually returns to that of your pre-injury level, your treatment team will start to discuss finalising your treatment.

Reducing and finalising treatment

During this time, yourself and your psychologist will reflect on your progress and determine whether you have achieved your treatment goals.

The cessation of treatment will not be with any immediate effect, it's common for treatment providers to gradually reduce the frequency of your sessions. For example, you may go from having fortnightly consults with your psychologist and tapering this down to monthly consults. From there, your psychologist may move to 'when needed' or maintenance consults.

During the finalising of your treatment, your treatment team will ensure that you have integrated all the learning and skills you have developed through your treatment plan and are able to apply these independently to situations outside of treatment. It is likely at this stage that you have already returned to some form of work and are able to better manage your symptoms, your environment and every-day life.

You may find that after formally finalising treatment, you start to experience a resurfacing of symptoms and feel that you need to reconnect with your psychologist. It's possible your case manager may be able to approve some further sessions for you if the presenting symptoms are related to the original workplace injury.

If you have stressors outside of your workplace injury and feel that you need some support, you can discuss this with your nominated treating doctor who may be able to provide you with a Mental Health Treatment Plan.

Expense entitlements

Your entitlement to medical and related expenses may cease at differing times depending on your assessed level of impairment and the date you ceased to be entitled to weekly benefits. This will typically be either two years or five years after your weekly compensation payments cease.

Learn more about entitlement periods

Please note if you are an exempt worker (police officer, paramedic, firefighter) there is no time limit for reasonably necessary medical treatment whilst your claim is open and accepted.
