Shine Magazine Winter 2022

Welcome to our latest edition of Shine Magazine.

Dr Steven Peterson is a Lifetime Care participant and has returned to work as a GP.

Shine is produced for participants of Lifetime Care and the Workers Care Program. Through sharing personal stories in their own voice, others are able learn about life after a severe motor accident or workplace injury. These real-life stories of resilience, recovery, personal growth, and new beginnings provide insight into life after a serious injury.

In this edition we hear from Steven, a well-regarded doctor and an active member of the local Orange mountain bike club. Following a cycling accident, he became a quadriplegic and wheelchair user, and got back to work at the drug and alcohol centre as soon as he could doing rural hospital telehealth and training.

We also hear from:

  • Paul, a keen athlete who also worked as a stone letter cutter. He was knocked down by a cyclist on the pavement which resulted in a brain injury. Since then, he has shown discipline and patience into new pursuits and picking up a paint brush.
  • Mackinlee, one of our younger participants aged 10. She was not expected to survive the accident when she was six, which resulted in her pelvis broken in three places, a ruptured bladder, broken femur and severe brain injury. She has had a remarkable recovery, back at school full-time and looking forward to the arrival of a French bulldog puppy.
  • Jack, who worked hard and partied hard before his motorbike accident. Now, still living with the effects of a brain injury, he is trying to be the best version of himself and to help others.
  • Chris, who relished his work as an arborist, fell from a height of six metres while high up in a tree resulting in a brain injury and a compressed spine. Whilst he no longer works with trees, he pursues his passion for collecting motorbikes and is a carer for his mum who has dementia.
  • Simon, a musician who lives with aphasia, a condition which affects his ability to express language. A fall and a brain injury brought an end to Simon's busy career developing and managing nightclubs. He has now turned his talents to composing music. There is a link to listen to one of Simon's composition in this edition of Shine.
