Shine Magazine Winter 2021 edition out now

Welcome to our latest edition of Shine Magazine.

Jess is a lifetime care participant with her partner and son

Lifetime Care participant Jess and her family

Shine is produced for participants of Lifetime Care and the Workers Care Program. Through sharing personal stories in their own voice, others are able learn about life after a severe motor accident or workplace injury.

These real-life stories of resilience, recovery, personal growth, and new beginnings provide insight into life after a serious injury.

In this edition, we hear from Felicity and her life's ambition to work with horses. Everything changed for her when she fell through a roof on the family farm. Now the determined 24-year-old is getting stronger and is back on the saddle.

We also hear from:

  • Jess, the 17th participant to enter the Lifetime Care and Support Scheme who barely survived a terrible accident when she was 17. Understanding and living with her brain injury took time. She is now the proud, content and infectiously happy mother of a two-year-old boy, Joey.
  • Jerome, his adventure continues after a motorbike accident that left him with a spinal cord injury. He learnt to drive again, completed a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and now works on vehicle modifications for people with disabilities.
  • Andrew, a former personal trainer who pursued his passion to build a video and photography business after a motorbike accident.
  • Jess, a self-written sibling story. Jess shares her emotional experience as a sister and young carer after her brother sustained a spinal cord injury and reminds us that traumatic injuries impact the whole family. Working with the wecare program Jess was able to find herself again.
  • Ricky, who found his spark after a spinal cord injury and is now able to return to work in the same electrical trade using new skills.
  • Alison, an artist and country NSW teacher shares her story of rehabilitation, return to work and how her brain injury improved both her art and teaching. Alison recently won icare's Shine Art Prize for her entry 'April is still the cruelest month', referencing the physical and emotional changes following a car accident.
