Shine Arts Exhibition opens at NSW Parliament House

The creativity and resilience of people living with the impact of severe injury will take centre stage this November at the Shine Arts Exhibition, hosted at NSW Parliament House.

Exhibition details

Running from Tuesday 4th to Thursday 27th November, the exhibition features the work of 35 artists supported by icare’s Lifetime Care and Support Scheme and Workers Care Program.

It is proudly sponsored by the Hon. Mark Buttigieg, MLC, Parliamentary Secretary for Work Health and Safety, and Parliamentary Secretary for Multiculturalism.

Through painting, drawing, textiles, video and music, each artwork reflects the theme, "My Favourite Things," exploring the objects, activities and moments that bring joy, inspiration and strength during recovery.

Established in 2020, the Shine Arts Prize competition is a wellbeing initiative presented by icare NSW in partnership with Accessible Arts. It provides a platform for artists to share their stories, highlight their creative talents, and showcase the powerful role of art in recovery and community connection.

icare Group Executive, General Insurance and Care, Sarah Johnson, says the exhibition embodies icare’s commitment to person-centred care.

"Shine Arts Prize is a celebration of resilience and creativity. It demonstrates how art can support healing, restore confidence and connect people to community. We are proud to showcase the talents of these artists, whose works reflect not only their artistic ability but also their journeys of perseverance and recovery," she says.

Among this year’s exhibiting artists is Danette, who is presenting three dresses made from recycled fabrics. Sewing has been central to her rehabilitation journey following a brain injury.

"It means so much to me to get recognition for all my efforts and to see how far I’ve come in this long rehabilitation journey. It’s letting people know there is life after brain injury and there still is more to go," she says.

Also featured is Asha, whose passion for painting began during hospital rehabilitation nearly two decades ago.

"I look back now and think, it’s unbelievable how something beautiful can come out from a dark time in your life. Today I can’t live without painting. It’s calming, it’s peaceful, and I believe it brings us to our happy place," Asha says.
