Statement on the retirement of Michael Carapiet and Gavin Bell

icare thanks Michael Carapiet (Chair) and Gavin Bell (Deputy Chair) for their years of outstanding service in helping reform and improve NSW State insurance schemes.

Mr Carapiet and Mr Bell have been an integral part of the NSW insurance schemes since 2012 and icare acknowledges their enormous contribution.

Mr Carapiet has been Chair of the Workers Compensation Investment Fund, Safety Return to Work & Support (SRWS) and then icare. The mantra, "to do good you have to do well," was a motto that underpinned the stability he brought to the schemes–keeping average premiums at their lowest levels in 33 years and providing injured workers and severely-injured road users with better care and support.

Mr Bell has been the Deputy Chair of icare since 2017 and Chair of the People & Remuneration Committee, as well as the Chair of the Dust Diseases Board since 2015. Under his tenure the Dust Diseases Board increased research funding into new lung disease treatments and lung screenings, established a purpose-built Dust Diseases Clinic and a mobile unit travelling across NSW.

Mr Carapiet advised the NSW Government in late 2019, and the icare Board at the beginning of 2020 of his intention to retire from the icare Board and Mr Bell did likewise. The icare Board renewal process was initiated in May.

The change will allow the incoming Chair to lead the Board in the search, selection and appointment of the new CEO of icare.

Mr Bell has retired already and Mr Carapiet will be doing so after the finalisation of icare's 2019-20 financial accounts.

icare also welcomes the appointment of incoming Chair John Robertson and looks forward to working with him to continue to drive better outcomes for our customers. This includes icare's commitment to fully cooperating with the McDougall Review as per the Terms of Reference announced today.
