Industry veteran Steve Hunt retires

icare CEO Vivek Bhatia today announced longstanding insurance industry stalwart Steve Hunt’s decision to retire after 17 years with the NSW government and 12 years leading its Self Insurance business.

Hunt will transition from his role as icare Group Executive, Self Insurance on 1 June 2017 to focus on the Self Insurance Transformation until his retirement.

Mr Hunt has been at the helm throughout NSW Self Insurance Corporation’s (now icare self insurance) journey to date. He was responsible for creating both the NSW Self Insurance Corporation and the Home Building Compensation Fund (HBCF) and was instrumental in the development of Tort Law reform in Australia.

“Steve has had a magnificent career and is highly respected in the insurance industry and public sector for his deep industry knowledge, commercial acumen and for delivering exceptional service to government agency clients. He leaves a strong legacy for the NSW Self Insurance Corporation,” Mr Bhatia said.

“Throughout his career Steve built a reputation as an inspirational leader who offered strong guidance and wisdom to his peers – he will be sadly missed.”

As he transitions into retirement, Steve will lead the transformation of icare’s Self Insurance business as Group Executive, icare self insurance Transformation and support the business transformation program. Tim Plant - currently Group Executive Innovation - will expand his responsibilities in the newly created role of Group Executive, Self Insurance, Community & Innovation.

“Tim’s charter will be to lead icare’s Self Insurance business as well as our very important innovation agenda across icare. Ultimately this will accelerate the execution of our strategy to transform icare into a world-class insurance and care organisation,” Mr Bhatia said.

“He will also continue to lead the icare Foundation and icare’s Health & Community Engagement Teams, where we are creating new community partnerships that expand and enhance the services provided for both businesses and injured people, their families and loved ones.

“Mr Plant was previously CEO of QBE’s Australia and New Zealand operations. He brings more than 25 years experience in insurance and reinsurance, including more than a decade as a senior executive for one of the world’s largest insurers."
