About Hunter Spinal Cord Injury Service
"Hunter Spinal Cord Injury Service (HSCIS) specialises in service delivery for adults with spinal cord injury. It was established in 1987 and has grown specifically to meet the needs of people living in the Hunter region with spinal cord injury. We provide services to both the public and private sector. We have extensive experience and provide consultation to other health professionals within the Hunter on management of spinal cord injuries. The team includes:
• Case management
• Rehabilitation specialists
• Occupational therapists
• Clinical nurse consultant
• Social worker
• Rehabilitation aide
HSCIS has a fully equipped gymnasium and clinic facilities based in Hunter Street, Newcastle and provides outreach services and home visits servicing the Hunter.
Current case managers are Anitra Thomas and Alejandro (Alex) Silva.
Anitra has worked as a physiotherapist specialising in spinal cord injury and other community based rehabilitation since 2004. She has extensive experience in case management and assisting clients with compensable injuries both in the United Kingdom and multiple states in Australia. Anitra has been the Service Manager for HSCIS since 2017 and is an active member in the State Spinal Cord Injury Service Clinical Development Committee and other spinal cord injury networks.
Alex has worked as the clinical nurse specialist for HSCIS since 2006 and has specialist skills in wound management, autonomic dysreflexia, bowel, bladder and sexual function for clients with spinal cord injury. He is an experienced case manager and is a member of the NSW SSCIS working party for the Model of Care driving better care for all people with a spinal cord injury."
